I wonder why he's here

Poem Written in August - Edited 3/21/09
NOTE TO SELF - EDIT MORE.

He smiles from the bottom of his heart
he gives me the dregs of the day
as we drive home in silence
his thoughts aren't near his eyes
and I space words between yawns in the dark.

What I say is simple, what I say is bland
what truth I say is whispers
though now I'm thinking rather loud
I feel him out like parting smoke
but only get a hand

his replies are clear and simple
just sweet flickers of affection
or perhaps reflections
too thin to be dangerous
or catch me in his hold
But all good things grow tiresome
as anything gets old

It might takes years to know him
or years to know I did
yet he loves me to the civil letter
but I wonder why he's here.
I wonder why he's here...
